Acacia's Ceramics Gallery
Unit 2
Small animal sculpture
This is Edwardo, my signature banana slug doodle. I choose to make him with clay because I always draw him everywhere. The construction process was very simple, but the eyes were a bit difficult to get to stand up.
I think that this piece turned out basically how I was expecting it to. It's not my most intricate, or effortful creation, but i think it turned out very cute, which was the goal. I think it's cool that I now have a 3D version of my signature doodle. I also like how awkward and nervous he looks, just like in the drawings.
Pinch pot cut in half
For this project, we weren't supposed to finish it or fire it, it was just to practice making the pot even all the way through. I think it looks pretty even, and it helped with all the pinch pots that I have made since.
Useful pinch pot (two stacked)
For the construction of this piece, I made two pinch pots and stacked them on top of each other, and then I shaped the top of it. I then carved vines into the clay once it was leather hard, and glazed it with regular glaze. I think the hardest part of the construction was getting it to be smooth and even.
Overall, I like how this vase came out. I really like the was the spotted glaze gave it a little bit more of an interesting appearance. The only thing is that I glazed it with two different colors, and only one showed up. The vines were supposed to be more of a blue shade. It's also not perfectly smooth or even, but it's a pinch pot so thats to to be expected. Looking back on making it, I think it would have been more functional if it was a little bigger, and if I were to make it again, I would increase the size.
Relief tile
This piece was not very successful. It was supposed to be like a sun and moon with a face, but after I tried to get the eyes to be even a few times, I got frustrated and gave up. First, I cut our a square, and then attached a circle to it, and sculpted each sun tendril and attached that on as well.
If I were to make this piece again, I would try and measure out where the eyes go with an actual ruler instead of trying to just eyeball it. I would also try and just have a little more patience with it, and not give up so easily. Its a bummer that it didn't turn out, because I had a really cool idea for it and it was supposed to be a present for my dad.
Historically inspired piece
This has been my most intricate and difficult piece yet. The construction process was very long. Basically. I first just made a very wide and shallow pinch pot, and they sculpted and attached all of the pieces, and molded the hair and the rim of the bowl together. I also put some glass beads in the bottom to make it look more like water.
I am very proud of how this piece turned out. I put a lot of effort into it, and I really love it. I'm most proud of the way the wave looks from the behind. The only things I am a bit dissapointed about is that the glaze turned out a lot darker than I was expecting, and the glass is less fluid looking that I though it would be. I think if I added maybe one or two more beads to the bottom, it would have turned out better.
