Unit 3

Slab slump mold and coil build project

For this project, I started it with a lot of motivation, and it just didn't go as well as I was hoping. It was really difficult to make everything even, and it was even more difficult to get everything scored and slipped enough so the little pieces wouldn't fall out. I was already starting to loose motivation, and then I dropped it and didn't really have the time or patience to start over. If I were to do it again, I would plan it out more thoroughly, and find a way to make it so everything stuck together better.

Sgrafifto

For this piece, I first sculpted a mug around an empty container, and twisted two coils of clay together to form the handle. After that, I painted it with red underglaze, and carved away the parts I wanted to stay white. Then, I glazed it with clear glaze so it can be drank out of.

I am very proud of how this piece turned out. I like the handle a lot and most of the snowflakes look pretty. The only thing I would do differently next time is I would practice carving on another piece of clay before I got started on the real mug. The first snowflake I made if much uglier then all the others and I think that could have been avoided with some practice beforehand.

Slab building with darts

This was another piece that I ended up not firing. It just felt like no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't get it to look even. I think if I were to do it again I would have tried to measure out exactly where the triangles should go, and how big each on should be before I cut them. I decided to slop bucket this piece, because I felt like it would be more productive to spend my time working on other projects from this nsit.

Monster

The construction process for this monster took a while, but was not a difficult as I was expecting. The head and body are both pinch pot type structures, so hollow in the middle. I then sculpted all the little arms and legs and things and attached them on. The moth goes all the way through the clay, to make it appear more realistic.

I'm not done with my monster yet, so i'm going to wait to do a full reflection on it until it is finished. However, I am very happy with how it is turning out so far.
