Unit 5 Projects
Alebrije
The construction of this piece was fairly simple, but there were definetly some challanges. First, the big ears made it very top heavy, and it was difficult to get it to stand up without tipping forwards. Once I got the front legs on, that problem was solved though. Second, a leg and ear fell off. I was working with it while it was bone dry, and very fragile, and these parts ended up falling off. I tried reattaching them with slip, but it didn't work, so I ended up firing the pieces separately and then gluing it back together.
Overall, I think this piece came out pretty cute, even though the reattached limbs are a bit messy. I think the glaze came out really nice, and i'm proud of myself for not giving up after the limbs fell off. If I were to do it again, I would just be more careful while handling it in its bone dry state. I also wish I had changed the eyes before I fired it, because something about them is a little off putting to me.
Small bust
The construction of my bust was very difficult, and did not end up how I wanted. I spent a couple days experimenting with it, adding this, and taking things off, and eventually just decided to scrap it. It seemed like the more I tired to fix it, the less I liked it. Making a realistic human face proved to be a lot more difficult than I imagined.
If I were to make this piece again, I think I would maybe watch some ore tutorials for each specific feature, instead of just kind of winging it. I think that I also went into not expecting it to turn out very good, and this made me less motivated to complete the piece.
Other unit 5 projects
The reason why I don't have more unit 5 projects done, is it took a really long time to glaze my alebrije. The details were very time consuming, and also the leg and ear falling off set be back in the process quite a bit. Also, the bust was very difficult, and even though it may not look like, it, I did put a lot of time into it. The pictures to the right display the intricate glazing that I did on my alebrije.
