Senior Capstone
Through dance, I have demonstrated the leadership SLOs. This art form has taught me to “respect diversity and the opinions of others” (L2) and to “demonstrate integrity and responsibility” (L3). Respect for diversity and differing opinions is something that TWDCC takes very seriously. The teachers at TWDCC offer numerous opportunities for dancers to learn about different dance cultures and the wide range of diversity within the art form. Recently, my dance company had the privilege of learning from Dandha Da Hora, a highly talented Brazilian dancer, choreographer, and musician. She shared her knowledge of Afro-Brazilian dance as well as insights into her culture. Learning a completely new dance style and then performing it was challenging, but it was also a valuable opportunity to explore someone else’s culture through the universal language of dance. This wasn’t the first time I’ve worked with choreographers from diverse backgrounds. Each opportunity to learn about the culturally rich world of dance is one that I approach with respect and an open mind.
My time at TWDCC has not only taught me to “respect diversity and the opinions of others” (L2) but has also instilled in me the importance of “demonstrating integrity and responsibility” (L3). Being a member of the company requires dedication and professionalism, both of which are tied to integrity and responsibility. Last summer, I was invited to travel to New York with some of my fellow company members to participate in a summer intensive at Garth Fagan Dance. I have trained in Fagan technique for years, and my current head dance teacher is a former Garth Fagan company member. This experience demanded high levels of responsibility and integrity. We were responsible for our own meals, transportation, and packing, and we were taking classes with adults while representing our company. This required us to maintain a mature and professional attitude. Overall, dance has equipped me with many important life skills, including L2 and L3.
