Senior Capstone

Being a part of my dance company has taught me the importance of demonstrating empathy and kindness (V2) and engaging in collaboration (V3). I am a member of the TWDCC youth company, where I have the opportunity to dance with a wide range of people, from ages seven to eighteen. As a senior company member, I understand the significance of serving as a role model for the younger dancers. This means consistently showing empathy and kindness to my fellow dancers—virtues that are essential in all aspects of my life. However, they are especially important when working with large groups, which is something I often do. Group dances with

many people are only possible when everyone treats each other with empathy and kindness. A perfect example of this was when our company participated in the Deep Roots Dance Festival, and all company levels (1-5) performed on stage together. This experience required a lot of patience and mutual understanding. The festival also gave us an opportunity to practice collaboration (V3). Collaboration skills are extremely important, not

only in dance but in everyday life. I have collaborated with many dancers on various occasions, not just at Deep Roots. The most challenging aspect of collaboration in dance is creating choreography with others. Choreographing can be a vulnerable process, and it can be difficult to make compromises and work together to create a cohesive final product. However, my time at the Tannery has provided me with extensive experience collaborating with others, reinforcing the importance of both V2 and V3.
